Exploring the Heroine’s Journey through Stories & Myths using Drama Therapy
Overview
The module will explore the stages of the Heroine’s Journey with a drama therapy approach. Participants will be introduced to ways of using stories and myths in their work with clients and groups; and develop and integrate this practice into their therapeutic work with self and clients.
Maureen Murdock’s framework offered in her book The Heroine’s Journey: Women’s Quest for Wholeness will be used as a reference.
Heroine’s Journey using Stories & Myths is open to all adults interested in drama / drama therapy / storytelling.
Drama therapy using stories and myths involves exploring traditional tales, legends, and personal narratives to help individuals connect with universal themes and archetypes. Myths and folktales provide symbolic frameworks that can mirror personal struggles, offering a deeper understanding and a sense of shared human experience. This approach can be especially powerful for healing, transformation, and personal growth.

Pallavi Chander is an artist, facilitator, and creative arts therapist with over 15 years of experience working across schools, special needs centers, arts collectives, charities, and hospital settings in India and the UK. Based in Bangalore, India, she works with neurodivergent individuals, differently-abled children and adults, and young people facing behavioral or mental health challenges, along with their caregivers. Pallavi is passionate about integrating the arts—drama, movement, visual arts, storytelling, music, and play – into therapeutic and educational spaces, fostering culturally relevant and inclusive mental health practices.
She is a certified Arts-Based Therapist, trained with WCCLF, Pune (2012), and completed her postgraduate training in Drama and Movement Therapy at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (RCSSD), London, supported by the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship in 2015. Her therapeutic approach is influenced by arts-based therapy and the Sesame approach, which draws from Jungian psychology, Laban movement analysis, play theory, and Billy Lindkvist’s work on Movement with Touch and Sound. Currently, she leads community-based projects across South India under the initiative “Turiya,” collaborating with grassroots organizations and institutions to explore research, education, and indigenous approaches to mental well-being through a social justice lens.
